Assignment #1 The Subject is Light

Due Date: September 14

Turn in: Two proof sheets, Two 8 x 10 prints

Shoot two rolls of 36 exposure film

Select subjects that reveal the strong, distinct qualities of light. For example: select subjects to shoot that show how light shapes and models the subjects.

Shoot images that show light as a pattern or shape by the shadows it casts.

Keep an eye open for reflections (chrome bumpers, store window displays)

Look for interesting textures (bark, animal fur, pebbles, peeling paint, to name just a few examples)

MOVE IN CLOSE to meter subject. You can make a substitution reading from the palm of your hand  (don't forget to open up one stop when metering your hand) or the ground if you cannot get close to subject.

When composing your image, consider the following:

Where you place the camera (i.e.: would placing it closer to the ground increase the dramatic impact of the image?)

Distance from camera to subject. Should you move in closer? (yes!)

What you include within the frame of the photograph (not just the “main” subject, but pay attention to background)

Composing vertical as well as horizontal images

Then, do the following, in this order:

Process film

Make a proof sheet of each roll

Select your 2 best negatives and make 8 x 10 prints, with appropriate filter, burned and dodged as needed.
