"Composition" Unlike a painter, a photographer is not starting with a blank canvas. The photographer must select what will be included in the frame and what will be left out (framing the image). composition is the way the objects in the frame are arranged to lead the viewer’s eye through the image. They help the viewer "read" the image. When considering composition there are (at least) Three Principles to Keep in mind:
2. Perspective - The ways a sense of dimension or depth are established in the image include: linear perspective, apparent brightness, interposition (objects placed in front appear bigger), shapes and shadows, textural gradient, and more... 3. Juxtaposition - By placing objects next to each other a physical or conceptual comparison is made. The opposite of this is an object in isolation. Many good images contain more than one compositional element! "Building Blocks of Design" 1. Shape - (outline) Other tips to keep in mind: Show no unnecessary sky or foreground (unless that is the subject of course) "If your images aren't interesting enough, you're not close enough". - Robert Capa Make a deliberate choice of showing a big view or a close up... LOOK AT DIFFERENT OPTIONS! Keep the eye busy within the frame. Assignment: Show 3 examples of compositional choices. From the list below you may shoot as many as time allows, but you only need 3 final images.
Create an image where: 1. The main subject is place following the "Rule of Thirds". 2. The main subject is placed at an ‘action’ point (areas near but not touching the edges of the ‘visual center’ of the frame). 3. The main subject is located along the very bottom of the image. 4. The main subject is located around the edges of the frame. 5. The main subject is in the ‘visual center’ of the frame. Or an image which illustrates: 6. ‘Symmetrical Balance’ 7. ‘Asymmetrical Balance’ 8. ‘Dynamic Balance’ (objects going in different directions). 9. Using ‘leading lines’ for perspective or to lead the eye around the image.
