Secondary Printing Controls: Burning-in and Dodging-out

Dodging refers to the selective deletion of light from areas of your print during the exposure. If a certain area of your print is getting darker than you want, block the light from falling on that area during part of the exposure. You are taking away or subtracting light from selected parts of your print to intentionally make them lighter without affecting the rest of the print.

Burning-in refers to the selective addition of light to areas of your print after the initial exposure. If a certain area of your print is not getting dark enough, add more light to that area after the initial exposure has been given. You are adding light to sections of your print to intentionally make them darker without affecting the rest of the print.
